Anyone been on beta blockers for the treatment of panic/anxiety?

I have had panic attacks and generalized anxiety for awhile now and I get short of breath and have chest pains. I have been to the er and my family dr. many times and they all say that my chest pain and tachycardia is due to panic/anxiety. I am having a hard time believeing this! So, do the beta blockers work and how long are they usually prescribed for this and how long do they take to work? I still am havong symptoms. I am also just starting effexor xr 150mgs. Any advice would be helpful!

I use to be on paxil for anxiety, but it never cured it or made it better, i would still have 10-20 panic attack per month. Then I switched my diet, and read the section of this book, and took the supplements. Now I rarely need to take the supplements, a doctor in the ER one night stated that my anxiety was causing half of my “symptoms”. Heart palpation’s was a major one, which they did put me on beta-blockers. You need to know that your anxiety is causing your heart to palpitate. Doctor explained it as a tea pot on very high heat with a top that won’t come off. Sooner or later you need stop, take a breath, tell yourself nothing is physically wrong with yourself (even though you have the symptoms, numbness, a feeling that everything is surreal, heart palpitations, etc.). The doctor stated that it won’t work right away, but if every time you have a panic attack you talk yourself through it, and tell your self nothing is wrong, take deep breaths, after about 20 or more times, your attacks and durations decrease. How to overcome anxiety and panic attacks?

I just started getting some of the attacks and symptoms in all my life and I searched Google and all these people are saying they have suffered for years with disability and anxiety just learn to live with it … which of course made me even more crazy. I do not want to live if I have to deal with this! I never really do anything suicidal, but this is making me very depressed. The success stories? Preferably do not use drugs, but cognitive behavioral therapy or something else?

The first thing I had to do was to recognize that is panic or anxiety, and not a heart attack! My attacks were so debilitating that often pass out and end up in the emergency room wondering what happened this time. I found a great therapist who taught me how to get through the attacks. When I felt it was coming, I would go somewhere alone, like another room or in the hallway or whatever. I sit quietly and count slowly, breathing deeply and closed his eyes. Soon my heart rate calmed down, I would stop shaking and the attack would ease up. Sometimes I had to have pretty high, but sometimes could only count to 200 or so, and it would loosen. The effort I have forgotten symptoms and I knew that my attacks only lasted about 6-8 minutes, so I just sat quietly, and keep doing deep breathing, as I was taught. Soon the attack was over and he was fine. This did not happen overnight, but as serious and as often as my seizures were any relief at all was welcome. Now, when I feel a panic attack coming in, I do the same, knowing you can get through it without medication. (Xanax helped me in the beginning, but side effects were horrible and I stopped taking it.) Sometimes instead of telling myself, I would count on the fingers or the photo of the numbers in my mind, any thing to keep in my mind attack symptoms. Give a try-it might work for you! I also suggest a good therapist. I also learned meditation and yoga to relax. Both can be wonderful tools to help you. Best of luck, you can!

Stress and anxiety are common in today's world. However, it is only when symptoms become severe in a panic attack that becomes a problem serious. Here we focus on controlling panic attacks.
