panic attack passing out

There are nearly three million people in the United States who suffer from anxiety panic attacks. When a person is stressed, the normal reaction that follows is that of a feeling of anxiety, which can actually be helpful in some situations. However, if a person’s anxiety becomes excessively frequent and uncontrollable, it has become a disorder. Panic attacks are the next step up from anxiety. An anxiety panic attack takes place when a person experiences sudden and overwhelming feelings of fear for no apparent reason. Symptoms include breathing difficulties, heart palpitations, trembling, chills, dizziness, and nausea.

An anxiety panic attack is more intense and the feelings experienced are seemingly more uncontrollable. For those who suffer from this disorder, there are several treatments available for you to use. Here are some ideas on what to do when it strikes.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is often recommended by physicians as a means of controlling anxiety panic attacks. Basically, the patient is taught to perceive their anxiety attacks in a different manner, which then enables the person to effectively control the way he or she reacts to the surroundings. This therapy has worked for many people, but as with any medical treatment, no one thing works the same for every person. However, when it is in effect, the chances of anxiety panic attacks returning is very low.

Another treatment option for people who suffer from anxiety panic attacks is desensitization. For those who experience intense fears and are bordering on phobias, this temporary treatment option could work. By exposing the patient to their fear in small dosages, he can eventually become desensitized to the fear and manage it more effectively. The down side to this treatment option is that the chances of the anxiety panic attacks returning are very high. The patient could develop a new fear to replace the old one or experience the old fear more intensely at another time.

Some individuals have also reported great success in managing their anxiety panic attacks following treatments of ‘tapping’ or energy psychology. The physician applies pressure or performs a tapping motion to specific pressure points on the body, which is said to relieve the feeling of anxiety. This thus reduces the probability of panic attacks from developing.

Medications are sometimes prescribed as an effective treatment option for anxiety panic attacks. Ask your physician about the medications used to treat this challenging disorder.

Herbal remedies should not be discounted as a possible treatment for these attacks as well. It is a natural approach to the problem, there are no side effects to the mind or body, and the herbs used help to alleviate the symptoms associated with anxiety panic attacks.

More immediate strategies for handling an anxiety panic attack include breathing exercises, thinking positively through the attack, and not fighting the feelings of panic. Allow the feelings of fear and panic to pass by breathing through them and focusing on a separate object or person. Remember never to run away from your fear! It may only get worse if you do not confront it directly. Remind yourself that the attack will pass eventually. Also, as you learn to manage your anxiety panic attacks properly, reward yourself for your accomplishments at the same time. Thus, understanding what you should do when an anxiety panic attack strikes enables you to better manage and control the condition effectively.

anti anxiety medications side effects

anti anxiety medications side effects

In our busy lives it’s very easy to ignore any situation that’s unpleasant or even uncomfortable. However what should you do if suddenly you become anxious without any known cause? There are people who become housebound due to their fear of being in crowded places or even open places where they might become vulnerable to the terror of panic attacks. It’s for situations like these, that anti anxiety medication is prescribed by doctors.

As there’s a large amount of anti anxiety meds available you might think that any one of these will be suitable to reduce your feelings of anxiety. However, even though many of these anti anxiety medications will work to a degree, certain types of medications will work best with the particular mental disorder that closely matches their chemical criteria.

For instance Benzodiazepine is an anti anxiety medication that has an almost instant reaction in the body. You can take this medication 30 to 60 minutes before going into a stressful situation. For people who have acute but infrequent anxiety attacks Benzodiazepine is the best anti anxiety medicine to take. However due to it’s addictive nature it’s best not to use Benzodiazepines for long term usage. The major side effect of prolonged use is that of seizures should you stop taking the medication abruptly.

Another type of anti anxiety medication used is that of SSRIs or serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors. These belong in the class of antidepressant drugs. These SSRIs are very popular due to their low addiction levels, their mild side effects and the fact that they can bring down the feelings of acute anxiety. SSRIs work by maximizing the natural levels of serotonin in the brain.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that can affect your moods. By taking an anti anxiety medication like Paxil, serotonin is inhibited from being reabsorbed by the body. Therefore more serotonin is produced to be used when it is necessary. The side effects are mild ranging from a dry mouth to sleepiness. If you desire quick results you shouldn’t take any SSRIs as they need 2 to 6 weeks to infiltrate your system before you would notice any significant improvement.

There’s also the anti anxiety medication dopamine agonists, which increases the levels of dopamine in the brain. Like SSRIs dopamine agonists take a few weeks to show relief from anxiety. The side effects of this class of drugs, includes insomnia and extreme excitedness amongst others. The last type of anti anxiety medication that is currently being used is that of Buspar. This drug is a mild anti anxiety medication that has little to no reporting of addiction usage. Like SSRIs and dopamine agonists discussed earlier, Buspar takes a while for its medical properties to take effect.

As with anything else these medications can help you to restore some semblance of normality to your life, but as with all drugs and treatments you should first talk with a trained medical practitioner who can help you in choosing the best anti anxiety medication for you.

panic attack symptoms uk

August 28th, 2008 admin No comments

More and more frequently in our UK hypno psychotherapy practice, we are seeing clients who present with symptoms of extreme anxiety and panic attacks. These feelings can and do have a really profound affect on a person’s life, often seriously curtailing his or her ability to function normally in their personal, work or social life

But what, in fact, is anxiety and what is its relationship to panic?

Well, anxiety itself is simply a symptom that is produced in response to a fear. It is based in the feeling that something bad is going to happen, and this triggers the flow of the hormone adrenalin in the body, eliciting a ‘fight or flight’ reaction.

Because of this, the body produces a number of responses which may include increased heart rate, sweating, muscular tension, rapid breathing, churning stomach and even nausea.

Anxiety can quite easily turn into feelings of panic when the symptoms of anxiety become so acute that they are allowed to consume the individual, producing heightened feelings of loss of control. As symptoms are experienced, they seem to feed the fear and, in so doing, they thereby enhance it and – hey presto, panic!

A good example of this is hyperventilation, or too rapid breathing, that causes us to breathe in a shallow manner forcing us to exhale too much carbon dioxide, which in turn produces its own symptoms, ranging from pins and needles to muscular stiffness, dizziness and perhaps even spasm.

It feels like the person is trapped in some kind of vicious cycle: fear just creates more fear and symptoms create more symptoms leaving the individual with feelings of being overwhelmed and trapped in a rapidly accelerating downward spiral.

Needless to say, such experiences can be filled with terror for the individual who is forced to endure them.

Perhaps the first thing that needs to be done when actually experiencing a panic attack is to slow things down and focus on breathing calmly. If necessary, a paper bag can be quickly inflated and held to the nose and mouth, enabling the person to breathe in and out a few times, thereby increasing the level of carbon dioxide in the blood, and slowing the breathing down.

Above all, it is important to remember that you will not die because you experience a panic attack. In fact, it is the fear of fear which really drives and magnifies the experience. Just take the time to practise, remembering to focus on breathing deeply and slowly; learning to relax your muscles systematically, the whole experience will be over and you will be able to pick yourself up and go on. But there is a far better way to live your life than having to constantly manage symptoms. That would be a bit like living with an elephant in your living room – yes, you could perhaps learn to cope with it being there, but how much better it really would be if you simply evicted the elephant.

The truth is that there really is no reason why you or anyone you care about should continue to suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.

Now, feelings of anxiety and panic are initiated at the subconscious level of the mind — because the subconscious is the powerhouse of all feelings — and this part of the mind has latched onto the incorrect perception that the person is in very real danger. Now, the subconscious mind simply cannot tell the difference between a real and an imagined event, and it is reacting as though the situation and thought that provoked the attack was indeed dangerous. The anxiety and the feelings of panic are actually symptoms of this process.

Through the medium of transformational hypnotherapy, we are able to connect directly with the subconscious mind and re-programme its beliefs in line with reality. Once we have uncovered the origin of its faulty perception, we are empowered to correct and neutralise it. The individual is then free to move forward, leaving this difficult and restricting condition in the past.

No-one was born to live in a constant state of anxiety and panic. With the correct treatment, you can put these states behind you. You can move on.

In short, with effective transformational hypnotherapy, you can get your own life back – and back on track.

panic attack public speaking

panic attack public speaking

Phobias are common. But, glossophobia (the fear of public speaking) is the most prevalent of all, and is thought to affect as many as three out of every four people in Western societies.

As with most phobias, glossophobia tends to develop in response to past experiences, either due to a single traumatic event or through gradual conditioning / association. The fear is then compounded by both negative emotions attached to memories of the past and anticipation/expectation of future poor performance, failure and/or ridicule. The fear of speaking in public is maintained and further compounded by avoidance of public speaking or fixation on it.

Symptoms vary, but typically include extreme anxiety prior to, or even at the thought of having to, verbally communicate with any group of people. The fight and flight stress response is triggered, increasing heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen intake, perspiration, stiffening the muscles, tightening the throat, and disturbing the thought processes leading to a greater incidence of “ums” and “ahhs”, forgetfulness and confusion. The anxiety generated, in extreme cases, can lead to a full-blown panic attack.

Adaptively speaking, there are two innate fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. But, the fear of public speaking serves no useful purpose. In fact, as those who suffer from it will be only too aware, it is an overwhelming fear that constrains opportunities and enjoyment of life, influencing choices, negatively impacting the physical body and diminishing feelings of self -confidence and self-worth.

Thankfully, Glossophobia is very responsive to hypnotherapy and can be swiftly and enduringly transformed through Public Speaking Hypnosis.

Christine Woolfenden, clinical hypnotherapist at Echelon Associates Hypnotherapy Practice, Charlbury, Oxfordshire www.echelonassociates.co.uk offers a six-eight session Public Speaking Hypnosis treatment programme.

At the outset, the individual’s unique situation is assessed, identifying and exploring the causes and triggers of the fear of public speaking as they exist in the individual’s life. The physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioural ramifications of that fear are also investigated in depth.

The Public Speaking Hypnosis treatment programme employs deep relaxation hypnosis to counteract the damaging side effects of the fight or flight response, easing away tension, re-educating the body to respond calmly and operate optimally. Direct positive suggestion and post hypnotic suggestion are used to change the cognitive responses, and to instil alternative, more effective ways of dealing with specific stressors, re-educating the mind to respond to the feared stimulus in a more relaxed and controlled way.

Memories from the past that are interfering with the present are uncovered, re-visited and re-framed, the emotional and cognitive influence on the present and future de-sensitised.

The Public Speaking Hypnosis Treatment Programme also applies techniques such as mental rehearsal, creative imagery, future pacing and pseudo-orientation in time to further minimise the negative stress response, maximise innate abilities, boost self-esteem and build confidence in ability to communicate effectively with any group of people.

Through Public Speaking Hypnosis, an understanding of future success is both established and cemented.

The anxiety attack symptoms can be more than one can tolerate and sometimes this is known as Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). GAD is chronic by nature and the whole day the patient has exaggerated worry as well as tension in spite of the fact there is little stimulus to provoke anxiety attack symptoms.

The anxiety attack symptoms are nothing new and have affected as many as 20 million people in the US, which works out to be one in every 14 people! Such anxiety attack symptoms might include phobias, post-traumatic stress syndrome, hypertension as well as obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

Treat with Medication and/or Therapy

An alternative to medication is therapy which is relatively inexpensive and even some employers may provide reimbursement for professional consultations. For places to find more information regarding anxiety attack symptoms one can consult books, videos as well as go online.

When a person feels extremes of fear one can safely assume that he or she is suffering from anxiety attack symptoms. Apart from fear, there are other anxiety attack symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness or feeling light headed, afraid of losing control or doing an embarrassing thing. Sufferers fear feeling out of touch with reality and people and things surrounding that person, forebodings of doom, palpitations of the heart, sweating and trembling, stomach disorders, numbness in the hands or feet, and also, loss of breath.

In the case of panic or anxiety disorders the patient may have anxiety attacks that occur frequently and there may not be any reason or warning about these attacks. Also, the patient may fear having another anxiety attack. And, there may also be periods without any anxiety attack symptoms.

anxiety medicine during pregnancy
Is there a safe anxiety medicine to take during pregnancy?

I’ve been prescribed xanax and have been on it for a while now. I just found out I’m pregnant, only 5 weeks. I immediately stopped taking my medicine and am wondering if anyone knows if there is something I can take that won’t harm the baby. Thanks!

Risk of Fetal Harm

Benzodiazepines can potentially cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. If XANAX is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus. Because of experience with other members of the benzodiazepine class, XANAX is assumed to be capable of causing an increased risk of congenital abnormalities when administered to a pregnant woman during the first trimester. Because use of these drugs is rarely a matter of urgency, their use during the first trimester should almost always be avoided. The possibility that a woman of childbearing potential may be pregnant at the time of institution of therapy should be considered. Patients should be advised that if they become pregnant during therapy or intend to become pregnant they should communicate with their physicians about the desirability of discontinuing the drug.

panic attack what to do

Episodes of panic attacks are appalling, but fortunately physically harmless. Panic disorder is a common condition in which a person has episodes of intense fear or anxiety that occur suddenly. These episodes – called panic attacks – can last from minutes to hours. They may occur only occasionally, or they may occur quite frequently. May occur randomly or when a person is exposed to various events that can "trigger" a panic attack. They suffer from panic disorder usually have a series of intense episodes of extreme anxiety known as panic attacks. These attacks usually last 10 minutes, however, may be of short duration, 1-5 minutes, too. Some individuals deal with these events regularly, sometimes daily or weekly. The external symptoms of a panic attack often cause negative social experiences. As a result, as much as 36% of all individuals with panic disorder also have agoraphobia. At least 1.7% of adults Americans, or about 3 million people, have panic attacks at some point in their lives. Panic attacks are a period of intense fear in which 4 of 13 definite symptoms develop suddenly and rapidly to peak within 10 minutes of symptom onset.

Some people are affected by frequent bouts of panic, a condition known as panic disorder. Panic disorder is thought to be largely inherited. People who experience panic attacks may fear they are dying, drowning, or who are having a heart attack. Panic attacks may indicate the presence of panic disorder, depression, or other forms of anxiety-based illnesses. About 5% of the population will experience panic attacks during their lifetime. A person experiencing a panic attack may believe he or she is having a heart attack or that death is imminent. The fear and terror that a person experiences during a panic attack is not proportional to the real situation and may be unaware of what is happening around them. Panic disorder can last for months or even years, depending on how and when requested treatment. There is also some evidence that many people may experience symptoms disappear, of course, later in life. Panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. Panic attacks are treated with techniques of relaxation and tranquility.

Most people get better with treatment. Panic disorder is real and potentially disabling, but can be controlled and successfully treated. People often go to theaters hospital emergency when they have panic attacks, and extensive medical tests may be performed to rule out these other conditions, creating more anxiety. Antidepressants tricyclics such as imipramine and MAO inhibitors like phenelzine (Nardil) have also been used, but many people experience side effects that are difficult to tolerate. Exposure to the phobia trigger multiple times without a resulting panic attack (due to medication) can often break the pattern of panic-phobia, allowing people to function around their phobia without the help of medication. Most of stimulant drugs (caffeine, nicotine, cocaine), is expected to worsen the situation, directly by increasing the panic symptoms, such as heart rate. Stress-relieving activities such as tai-chi, yoga, and exercise also can help ameliorate the causes of panic disorder.

Tips for Panic Attack Treatment

1. Tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine and MAO inhibitors like phenelzine (Nardil) have also been used.

2. Exposure to the phobia trigger multiple times without a resulting panic attack.

3. Stress-relieving activities such as tai-chi, yoga, and exercise can also help improve the causes of panic disorder.

4. Avoid stimulants such as nicotine and caffeine, which can be found not only in coffee, but many teas, sodas and chocolate.

5. Psychotherapy offers support and help to minimize the fear of symptoms, and sometimes is enough to clear the mess.

6. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people learn to cope with panic symptoms, using techniques like muscle relaxation and breathing.

7. Antidepressants such as Tofranil, often help reduce anxiety and the frequency and severity of panic attacks.

8. Meta-analyses13-15 support the efficacy of CBT in improving symptoms of distress and disability in general.
