General anxiety and depression very often occur together. Sometimes the anxiety comes alone first and then leads to depression, other times depression leads to anxiety. General anxiety, or “Generalized Anxiety Disorder” as it’s called by the medical community, refers to one particular type of anxiety disorder. The symptoms of GAD are numerous, but one common element is the tendency to get overly worried.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, People who suffer from this are stressed and worried even when there is nothing to realistically worry about. They are usually fatalistic in their outlook on the world, always expecting the worst, “They anticipate disaster and are overly concerned about health issues, money, family problems, or difficulties at work. Sometimes just the thought of getting through the day produces anxiety.”(NIMH).

General anxiety and depression can each greatly limit the lives of both the individual suffering from it and the people around her. When the two occur in combination, it can make it difficult to lead a normal life. It is not uncommon to treat both general anxiety and depression with a combination of medication and therapy. In some cases, generalized anxiety disorders are even treated with antidepressants like SSRI’s, Tricyclics or MAOI’s. All of these antidepressants can be helpful in treating anxiety symptoms, but there are often side effects, and they usually require 4-6 weeks before they fully work.

In addition to anti-depressants, there are specific medicines available to treat anxiety symptoms. These anti-anxiety drugs can often relieve the symptoms of anxiety, but they usually carry a high risk of dependency and many people experience that their tolerance increases with time, and they require higher and higher doses to get the desired calming effect.

In some cases, medication can help stabilize people so they are more receptive to treatment, but they are often not a good long term solution. It is important to know that medication does not cure anxiety or depression, but rather temporarily stabilizes the mood. In addition, studies show that youth and young adults through the age of 24, that are treated with SRI’s, have more suicidal thoughts than people in their age group diagnosed with depression but not treated with SSRI’s.

In addition to medication, the most common form of treatment for both generalized anxiety disorder and depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. This type of psychotherapy focuses on changing the way you think and behave, believing you’re your negative thought patterns and habits are responsible for a lot of anxiety and depression.

As long as the general anxiety and depression is mild to moderate, the person struggling with it can often can function in that he or she can hold a job and perform basic everyday tasks. When the anxiety and depression worsens, basic things like going to work or taking care of one’s grocery shopping can become un- manageable tasks.

Managing general anxiety is not always easy, but there’s a lot you can do to help yourself. You are not a victim, and there is nothing outside of you threatening to harm you. Whether you take care of yourself, or get professional help with your general anxiety and depression, remember that you are the one in control and at the end of the day; you are the one who has to do the work.

What is testing anxiety and is it treatable?c?

When taking exams I get very nervous and my mind goes blank. I am very knowledgeable of the material but have this to occur during test times. I can’t seem to get information from my brain onto paper. I excel in class. It’s very frustrating to know the info but fall apart during test time.

Test anxiety is a psychological condition in which a person experiences distress before, during, or after an exam or other assessment to such an extent that this anxiety causes poor performance or interferes with normal learning.

Physical — headaches, nausea or diarrhea, extreme body temperature changes, excessive sweating, shortness or breath, light-headedness or fainting, rapid heart beat, and/or dry mouth.
Emotional — excessive feelings of fear, disappointment, anger, depression, uncontrollable crying or laughing, feelings of helplessness
Behavioral — fidgeting, pacing, substance abuse, avoidance
Cognitive — racing thoughts, ‘going blank’, difficulty concentrating, negative self-talk, feelings of dread, comparing yourself to others, difficulty organizing your thoughts.

Test anxiety can develop for a number of reasons. There may be some prior negative experience with test taking that serves as the activating event. Students who have experienced, or have a fear of, blanking out on tests or the inability to perform in testing situations can develop anticipatory anxiety. Worrying about how anxiety will effect you can be as debilitating as the anxiety itself. This kind of anxiety can build as the testing situation approaches, and can interfere with the student’s ability to prepare adequately. Lack of preparation is another factor that can contribute to test anxiety. Poor time management, poor study habits, and lack of organization can lead to a student feeling overwhelmed. Student’s who are forced to cram at the last minute will feel less confident about the material covered than those who have been able to follow a structured plan for studying. Being able to anticipate what the exam will cover, and knowing all the information has been covered during the study sessions, can help students to enter the testing situation with a more positive attitude. Text anxiety can also develop genetically.

Lack of confidence, fear of failure, and other negative thought processes may also contribute to test anxiety. The pressure to perform well on exams is a great motivator unless it is so extreme that it becomes irrational. Perfectionism and feelings of unworthiness provide unreasonable goals to achieve through testing situations. When a student’s self-esteem is too closely tied to the outcome of any one academic task, the results can be devastating. In these situations, students may spend more time focusing on the negative consequences of failure, than preparing to succeed.

Test anxiety prevents students from demonstrating their knowledge on examinations. To be covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, test anxiety must pass two legal tests. First, it must be a “mental impairment.” As a form of Social Phobia, a mental disorder included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, it meets this first test. Second, it must “substantially limit one or more of the major life activities.” Individuals for whom test anxiety is one manifestation of Social Phobia-Generalized are substantially limited in the major life activities of interacting with others and working. Individuals for whom test anxiety is the only manifestation of their Social Phobia are substantially limited in the major life activities of thinking and working, the latter because they are excluded from any career requiring a test for application, credentialing, licensure, or training. Accommodations may include taking the test in a separate room or taking an untimed examination. Documentation supporting a diagnosis of test anxiety should include evidence of significant impairment in test performance.

Anxiety comes in many forms. Everyone feels anxious at some point in their lives is normal to feel a little anxious before an important exam or before giving a great speech. However, anxiety is problematic and can be considered a disorder when it begins to interfere with daily activities. The following are basic descriptions of symptoms and experiences that are common to different types of anxiety disorders.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – A person with disorder often anxiety and worry excessively. Although concern to all, a person with GAD can not control the worry. For example, concern may interfere with the ability to concentrate at work or school, despite looming deadlines. TAG is also often accompanied by physical symptoms such as muscle tension, headaches or gastrointestinal problems.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) – A person with OCD feels compelled to engage in behaviors or repetitive thoughts to relieve anxiety. For example, a person can wash their hands of hundreds of times per day due to his fear of germs.

The disorder Panic – With panic disorder, symptoms very suddenly, and out-of-the-blue. This sudden "attack" symptoms may include palpitations, sweating, tremors, nausea, or flushed face. A person experiencing a panic attack may fear that he / she is dying or suffering a heart attack, and can begin to avoid physical exertion or leave the house to minimize the possibility of a future panic attack. For example, a person can avoid running down the stairs for fear that a increased heart rate will cause a panic attack.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – A person with PTSD has survived or witnessed a fear-threatening situation. After the ordeal is over, he / she continues to feel very scared or have nightmares related to the traumatic experience. Some people may feel like you are reliving the experience, if something in the environment reminds them of the event. People with PTSD also tend to experience physical symptoms such as startles easily or increased tension.

Phobia – A phobia is an intense fear of an object or situation in particular. For example, some people have an intense fear of an injection or blood donation. Fear can be so intense that a person who prevents the blood, even if medically necessary. Other examples of phobias are fear of giving a public speech, fear of high or indoors, and the fear of insects or animals.

Social phobia – social phobia, a person fears social situations. These fears cause a person to avoid talking, eating or writing in front of others.

What was your experience with the drug anti-anxiety/depression?

What are you? What are the side effects?

i was on Prozac for severe anxiety, but I was in a very low dose (2 pills of 20mg). I was forced to go to therapy, while I took the medicine. I can honestly say, I had no side effects with Prozac. it took about 2 weeks to take effect, and the combination of pills and therapy, my anxiety was gone. I got off the medicine and had about 2 episodes since. I was Leary Medcine to go to, because I'm not too big a sick person, but I'm happy to do!

Okay, so you’re pregnant. Great !! The most important 9 months of your life .The most important 9 months for staying healthy and feeling stress free. But you need to stay healthy without pumping your system full of artificially created drugs . Drugs should only be used in cases of emergency but lots of times during your pregnancy you will feel under the weather, below par both physically and mentally. If you don’t turn to drugs what do you turn to ?

You can stay healthy in lots of ways during pregnancy. All of them are based on natural medicine . All of them can be effective in helping you look great and feel great for the most important 9 months of your life.

So what are they ? What are the main ways of keeping healthy during pregnancy ?

Pregancy and herbs is the area to examine first. Herbs are natural . Herbs have been used in the treatment of medical problems for thousands of years and they can be used to help you feel great and deal with some common pregnancy ailments.

You need to be aware of which herbs are safe and which are not.. There may be risks in using some herbs in pregnancy.

a) Herbs can lead to miscarriage, injury to the foetus or premature birth.

g) Pennyroyal.

Herbs which are safe to take during pregnancy:

The herb ginger root has been used through history to help alleviate sickness and nausea.

b) Oats and Oat Straw- these are great sources of calcium and magnesium and will help you to control anxiety ,restlessness and sore skin.

c) Peppermint leaf- again useful in helping to control morning sickness and flatulence.

Red raspberry leaf can also reduce nausea, help with labor pains and even increase the flow of milk. e) Slippery Elm bark- use the inner bark. This can help with vaginal irritation.

Additionally garlic, dandelion, and chamomile are noted for their healing properties. Chamomile is relaxing and can help you sleep, whilst garlic is great for the blood, and dandelion can help relieve mild edema.

In conclusion herbs, if taken properly and sensibly and in consultation with your midwife and professional herbalist, can help you to continue to feel healthy and look good during pregnancy. As with anything else some have tremendous benefits but others could do you harm. Be sure to take care.

anti depression and anxiety medication withdrawal side effects?

What are some side effects of stopping say 3 or 4 anti depressive and anxiety medication suddenly? I think it’s been about 3 weeks, and all the medications are out of my system. I’m feeling very odd, but don’t know how much of it is the withdrawal, and how much is other.

You can have withdrawal from stopping suddenly. You can have migraines, brain shakes, drowsiness,etc. You’re supposed to wean off of it. If you’re having withdrawal it probably should end soon. It really depends how long you were on it. Talk to your doctor! good luck!

Depression is a disorder that does not receive nearly enough attention. Depressed people are often told to "Cheer up" or "look on the bright side" of things, and may be even deeper when they can not simply be left to the mood that has such power over them. Anxiety can also lead to depression, where a sense of worry and fear the future leads to the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. That is a classic symptom of depression. Depression and anxiety have been seen together, and sometimes can carry each other.

Anxiety is one way to describe a certain way of feeling. It may represent a sense of fear, fear, or feeling that you are in immediate danger, even when you are safe and there is no reason to feel that way. There are several types of anxiety disorders, including phobias or irrational fears, anxiety situational panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorders, among others.

These disorders can lead to a state of almost constant stress, and may affect their daily lives much worse. You can not function in certain situations, or may come to fear leaving home, and if left untreated, symptoms of anxiety disorders can lead to many of the same problems as depression, including insomnia or unwillingness or fear of leaving home or being with others.

Where to start for anxiety, depression panic help?

I don’t have health insurance so my options are limited. Where does one go for prescriptions for treatment? Do you simply go to your regular MD at a walk in clinic and tell him or her you suffer from depression and anxiety? Will they write the script, or will they make you go to a shrink? Who provides the meds? It has become quite apparent to me, that with these meds it is a crap shot at best as to what works for each client. Most people seem to have to try two or three combos, or meds before they get it right, so why does it really matter? I know for 100% fact I have depression and the anxiety is obvious. So how easy is it to get started with some help? I have not the patience, or resources to go to $300 weekly shrink visits.

I’ve had this problem for years. Taking charge of your own health in addition to your doctor is a must. Recognising that you are depressed is a good start. My family doctor has worked with me to get the medication right. I’ve switched med’s through out the years, I think because our bodies and circumstances change, too. So, expect to have to work with the medicine. Having said that, you do need to see a doctor. It would be a good idea to have a friend recommend one so that you can see the same doctor again or at least be in the same practice on the next visit for the records. We have a “First Health” clinic that has payment plans and reduced rates for people like us w/o insurance and low income. It’s actually very nice. I also get my medicine at canadadrugs.com at half the price I would have to pay at the local drugstore. You’ll have to fax, e-mail your script and then mail it in. It does take about 2-3 weeks to get them, so ask you doctor for enough samples to get you by until they arrive. I would give the first medicine a good month to see how it works, so samples at first are a good idea because you have to order a minimum through canada and you’ll want to make sure those are the ones that are going to work for you. Tell your doctor that you would like a drug that tackles depression and anxiety, both. Also, when you do decide to try a drug, long term, and you want to get it online, make sure they write the script at least 100, to cover the minimum order requirements. Good luck!

Helping my daughter please?

My beautiful, funny, sensitive 14yr daughter is having a tough time lately and I really do not know how to help. Since last September has been suffering from anxiety resulting in panic attacks and agraphobic similar symptoms. Also recently confessed that he thought suicide last year and attempted to hang herself. This terrified me. She is seeing a psychologist, but last week her legs stopped working and is now in a wheelchair (this occurred during 5 months in March) and I know his fear of school (only for the crowd there) and I worry about the psychologist advice of a prolonged treatment when they need practical help now. I am very concerned for her I want her to have a quality of life. Please advise.

I was in a similar situation when I was 14 (now I'm 20). First things first your great to see a mother trying to help his daughter.That 's one of the best things to do. Let him know you are there for her and do everything possible to help get up and walk again. Do things with her that makes her feel so depressed and anxious. Make sure you know what your anxiety triggers are so that you can help prevent panic attacks. I'm honestly trying to scare you, but suicide is a very serious thing, never thought to be custom / cannot happen because it can happen. Try to lift your spirits. If she said she feels this way then be said for a reason, I was not trying to scare you, it seems, do not want to feel well. I was in hospital in Arkansas (14 days treatment) and helped to take my mind of things and taught me things to help boost my self esteem. My mother was never a very good support system and I honestly think if I had been there for me instead of criticizing me then 32 attempts to get my own and have been minimized greatly! Good luck with this desire, so much better!
