Am I having panic attacks in my sleep or asthma? Confused, please help?
I wake up in the morning with what feels like I am having a bad asthma attack. Shortness of breath to the point I use my inhaler. I am in a deep sleep and wake up with this often in the morning. Then after I do treatment to the asthma symptoms it feels like I did not sleep at all the entire night the rest of the day. I do recall when I wake up I do feel a bit panicky. However, my Dr. stated it sounds more like I am having panic attacks in my sleep that is provoking like symptoms of asthma since it only occurs during this time. He also said it’s not too common asthma patients have asthma attacks while they sleep.
I do have lucid night mares often about my ex boyfriend in the past where I was in a really bad abusive relationship with. They are about the things he did to me. Any suggestions or thoughts here? Should I try an over the counter sleep aid see if that helps?
The way you describe the attack does not sound like a panic attack to me. In my own personal experience with panic attacks they usually occurred before I am in the deep sleep faze. I have very lucid dreams because of my medication and I never remember having dreams before a nocturnal panic attack. When I’m having a panic attack, I wake very suddenly. Shortness of breath is prevalent, but it really the least of my worries. It isn’t just a panicky feeling, it is a terrifying experience. I’m positive that I am going to die or go crazy. Nocturnal panic attacks are worse than normal attacks for me, because I am still not fully awake and I’m completely confused and out of it, while I know what is happening during the daytime and can take control of the attack. For me, they usually last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes long, though it always seems much longer. I can’t sleep for days afterword because I’m worried it will happen again. You described it as feeling a “bit panicky”, but if you had had a nocturnal panic attack, it would be way more then a bit.
Experiences vary from person to person, however, but being a “bit panicky” does not constitute a panic attack. It just doesn’t sound like a panic attack. I’m no doctor, though. If it continues to happen, I would go see another doctor with your problem and see what he/she recommends. If it is panic attacks, sleep aids will not help (they will help you sleep, but they cannot stop a panic attack). For your sake, I really hope it isn’t panic attacks.
How to Stop a Panic Attack
To anyone on Paxil, how does it effect you and your life?
I’m 15 and have been on Paxil for 5 years. I want to know how long withdrawal symptoms last after taking paxil. And what are your side effects while taking paxil, and after getting off paxil how long does it take for the side effects to go away? If you stop taking Paxil does the anxiety, depression, and panic attacks worsen or stay away? And if I decide to have children later on will the paxil effect them? Any other information about paxil would be nice.
I was on Paxil for depression/anxiety for most of last summer at 30mg/day. It really helped my moods at first, and gave me no side effects, but after about a month I felt as bad as before mood-wise and repeated dose increases weren’t bringing any benefits. Frustrated, I quit it cold turkey at the beginning of September. It was a pretty stupid move – you should never quit ANY psych med suddenly, especially without telling your doctor – but fortunately I ended up being fine.
Most of my withdrawal symptoms were physical. I felt quite dizzy, and my skin felt staticky, a little like pins and needles. My consciousness in general felt out of tune, like when the radio dial is slightly off and the station isn’t coming through very clearly. So reality wasn’t coming through very well, but I was able to recognize that fact and compensate for it, so I don’t think I was acting particularly weird. Occasionally I would get “jolts” which would zap me simultaneously in every sense – vision, hearing, balance, sense of touch. At their peak (which was about 4-6 days after quitting) I was getting “jolts” every minute or so, especially when I was alert and active. The withdrawal symptoms started on day 2 of no meds, and were at their peak on day 4-6, diminishing after that until I was symptom free about 2 weeks after quitting. I was somewhat depressed during this period, but mostly I was just out of it.
For you, your doctor will probably recommend a “tapering” schedule where you take slightly less paxil each week until you are off of it. With a slow taper, you probably won’t even notice any withdrawal effects. It is possible that your depression/anxiety could worsen, so you should keep in touch with your doctor and monitor yourself. Your doctor may want to switch you to a different medication if your symptoms come back. However, it is equally possible that you will have no increase in depression or anxiety, and you will be able to live med-free.
For a really good guide on how to stop taking psych meds, check out:
http://crazymeds.us/discontinue.htm
(P.S. Crazymeds is a good site in general for learning about your medications. It’s run by fellow crazy people (no offense of course lol) rather than by doctors or by pharmaceutical companies, so it gives you straight talk and lots of details.)
Anyway, Paxil can only affect an unborn child if you are actually taking it during your pregnancy. Since you are planning to stop taking paxil now and you will probably not be having children for several more years, you have nothing to worry about in that department. If it turns out that you are still on antidepressants when you want to have children, just talk to your doctor. Some antidepressants are better for pregnant women than others, and studies have shown that children are better off having a mother who is on antidepressants during pregnancy than a mother who is depressed during pregnancy.
Best of luck!

Swollen left testicle and pain in left flank?
For around a year now I’ve had a swollen left testicle and pain in my left flank, mainly around my abdomen but sometimes also extending to my lower back. The pain is never sharp or very pronounced. Sometimes the pain seems to be centered on my left testicle, other times it seems more focused on my lower left abdomen, feeling like a minor stitch. I went to the doctor a few months ago and was diagnosed with epididymitis as the doctor’s examination showed that the testicular swelling was located in the epididymis, not the testicle itself. However, a urine test came back negative for epididymitis, and also for chlamydia and gonorrhea, and, the prescribed course of antibiotics have not solved the problem. My libido also seems lower than it used to be, but this may well be due to my anxiety about what the problem is. Does anyone have any advice about what this could be?
sound like it could be a varicocele. this can cometimes be hard to detect if it has not developed to grade 2 or 3. varicicele is a dilation of the pampiniform vein (the vein leading from the teste). it is present on the left in something like 70% of cases. Most doctors do not know this, but it can impair testosterone production, which would account for your anxiety. the pain of a varicocele is usually dull and can feel like heaviness in your testes. it can also radiate to the abdomen and inner thighs
a urologist will be experienced in diagnosis.

I take Buspar for Anxiety and its not helping…?
Ok i take Buspar i have been on it for a while now and i go to see the doctor in about a week to see how its working for me…actually its kinda making things worse…Will my doctor give me something new or just make me keep taking this? I am all for taking this medication b/c its not addictive like xanax and other anxiety meds…I just want something to make me quit have panic attacks and such…also i am having some side effects too….like diarrhea that hasnt stopped since the second day of taking the medicine….stuff smells funny and some things even taste weird…and i continue to have anxiety attacks although not as often…if anyone has some info on this please help….i just wanted to know if maybe my doctor will switch my meds….and if he does what he will most likley give me…and if i tell him i DONT want xanax with he give it to me anyway? im going crazy here…i really think i am…lol…please help
Antidepressants can help some people with anxiety a lot. Which one would work for you is hard to say, but I think they are better to try before drugs like Xanax. If you do end up talking about Xanax or Ativan, ask about Klonopin. It is longer acting and a little less addictive. The down side is that it takes about an hour to work.

High Blood Pressure Medicine Side Effects?
My husband was put on medication for blood pressure in October. Since then (and through of two different drugs) sleeps all the time, have anxiety attacks, lightheadedness, and generally acting stoned all the time. Has anyone else been through this and no light at the end of the tunnel? I need help to return to our lives and businesses. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I suspect that he is not telling your doctor everything the doctor needs to know to balance his medications properly, the men are known for this, at their own peril. I recommend you go with him the next visit and describe everything to the doctor. Her husband could be very sensitive and require reduced doses.
